If you are in financial trouble with unsecured debt, rest assured that you are not alone. In fact, many of us have faced the possibility of having to declare bankruptcy at one time in our lives. In fact, I one interviewed several bankruptcy attorneys to see if that was the right way to go for me and my family.

Fortunately for me, I was able to find another solution outside of declaring a chapter 7 bankruptcy or chapter 13 bankruptcy, and here are a few tips that will hopefully steer you in the right direction as well. It’s good to get solid bankruptcy information, but it is also a good idea to explore every option before moving forward.

1) Simple enough, step one involved you cutting up your credit cards and charging no more! I will tell you that no matter how much unsecured credit card debt you have, you are not as bad off as someone else. If you think about it, you can always find someone who is in a worse situation than you are. I don’t want you to focus on someone else’s problems here either; I just want you to know you are not alone! So get rid of those credit cards and never look back!

2) The next step is simple also. You need to take stock of your income vs your “spend” on the necessities of life. When I say this I mean that you need to first ensure you have the income it will take to cover your weekly basic cost of living. These expenses include food, shelter and anything that supports those two functions such as electric, gas, water, trash service and maintenance or repair. I would also consider your car to be a basic asset and that includes maintenance as well.

3) Now that we have stopped the unnecessary spending and our weekly and monthly budget is covered, it’s time to make a decision. What things can we reduce or eliminate that are truly not necessary? Do you really need 150 cable channels or could you get away with basic TV? What about your cell phone? Look over each thing and knock off $50 or $60 bucks per month and watch how things add up!

4) Next we need to figure out how much it would cost if we just made the minimum payment on each debt every month. If you have enough to cover, great! If not, you will need to look at the lowest balances first and begin to pay them off. Once one debt is paid off, work on the next and the next. You will also need to call some of the debtors and let them know what you are doing. Many will work with you, especially in today’s economy.

5) Finally, can you find a way to make some extra money? Can you throw newspapers in the morning for $450 per month? Every bit of extra will help.

What we are going for here is a planned attack on the debt by eliminating one at a time and then using the leftover or extra money to attack the next one! You can do it if you try.
