Filing for bankruptcy can certainly be a disruption in your life but what would you do without it? Now consider that! There once was something called ‘debtors prison’. That phrase bubbled up from some junior or high school memory of London in the sixteen hundreds. Images of dirty streets, pock marked with excessive horse excrement, populated by beggars, the smell of death in the air. Debtors prison, in this country, thank goodness, is a thing of the past, a bad memory in human history but who is to say that somewhere it still doesn’t exist? But I digress. My point is that thank goodness our legal system has developed compassion and given people in dire financial straits an instrument of the law to protect and guide them. I know it’s a terrible position to be in but at least it gives you the opportunity to hold on to your seat rather than have everything you own be taken away, commandeered, you and your family thrown out on the street, or worse, put into debtor’s prison, the key thrown away, never again heard from or seen. Armed with this alternative perspective, how grateful are you now for being able to file for bankruptcy?

I am not filing for bankruptcy but I feel seriously close to the edges of the question. Being a self supporting artist in this economy I am surviving on a prayer and a wing and a song. I have met artists, big guffawing artists, who talk about how well they are doing, about how people come in droves and stand in line to buy their tremendously expensive works, even in this economy. But this is not my reality. Do not let me mislead you. I have honestly sold a seventy five thousand dollar piece. Very very few artists can claim such a thing. However, those instances are few and far between and not my bread and butter. This economy sucks. Art is the first thing to go. It comes under the heading of ‘disposable income’. However, I have made a living and paid my bills for thirty three years! That’s incredible! And I have spent a lot of that time living very close to the edge but have lived unscathed and have raised wonderful children and enjoy health and vitality and so much more. So if you too feel very close to the act of filing for bankruptcy I recommend you too count your blessings.

Filing bankruptcy would certainly scare me to death – at first. Is not that how all things go. We are anxious, even about the good things, it is all exciting to begin with, good or bad and then we learn to ride the wave. So trust that you will begin to learn to ride the wave and then you will be an expert in this wave. Some people ride huge waves. Oh boy, when they break they can take you way down. Your life gone in a second. Smash. I’ll never forget getting up on a wave. I caught my first wave in the Pacific Ocean waters in November of who knows when. I was on my boyfriend’s surfboard with a few instructions……Paddle out beyond the break and turn the board while you are lying down and face the beach. When you see a wave building, keep your weight centered. If you feel the wave taking you get up on your knees, staying centered, and as soon as you feel the wave really carrying you then try to get up on your feet, staying centered in yourself and on the board and ride it on in! Well, guess what happened. My first time out I caught the big wave!!! The Pacific Ocean is known for its big waves and it was big - let me tell you! I caught it, it took me. I got up on my knees, I stayed centered. And then I looked down! Oh my gosh. I was 30 feet up in the air! I stayed on my knees, held on for dear life, road that wave in, and never got on a surf board again.
